24. THE ONLY NON-LUNAR TROCTOLITE — COMPLETE SLICE OF A NEW METEORITE

ACHON-UNGR
Sahara Desert, Northwest Africa
Found 2024 / TKW: 1339 grams

Here is a meteorite which must be seen to be fully appreciated. Carl Agee is just digging into this one — and Jay Piatek is simply digging it. Comprised almost entirely of olivine and plagioclase crystals, this is the only non-lunar troctolite in the literature. Said Agee, “This is a very cool sample. While it’s clearly unique, its oxygen isotopes plot on top of NWA 7325 & 11119 and it’s conceivable they all originate from the same parent body. Stay tuned.”

The first image reveals how the slice can be backlit. The second image is a close-up of the crystals with reflective light. While the surface seems to be highly textured, it’s not; the illusion comes from the refraction of light within the crystals. Now offered is a complete slice of a very exciting new meteorite (which may soon cost far more).
