22. ERG CHECH 007 — RARE ANOMALOUS PALLASITE
PAL-anom
Erg Chech Sand Sea, Algeria
Found 2020 / TKW: 8.3 kg
Similar to lot 37, the complete slices now offered originate from a single mass found in Algeria’s Erg Chech Sand Sea. When word of this discovery leaked, a massive search by multiple meteorite hunting teams ensued but no further specimens of EC 007 were found.
Less than 0.2% of all meteorites are pallasites — the most beautiful extraterrestrial substance known. Of the 189 different pallasites documented, fewer than 10% possess a sufficiently atypical chemical makeup to result in being classified as “anomalous” — as is the case with EC 007.
Both sides of this complete slice are polished. Rounded mango-hued olivine and peridot crystals are suspended throughout the metallic matrix. Originating from a mass smaller than a bowling ball, specimens of EC 007 are challenging to obtain.
110 x 73 x 2mm (4.33 x 2.75 x 0.1 inches) and 45.9 grams (0.1 lbs)
