34. NWA 12520 — COMPLETE SLICE OF AN IMPACT MELT BRECCIA
LL6, melt breccia
Sahara Desert, Northwest Africa
Found 2018 / TKW: 16 kg
Evidencing crystallized LL6 clasts suspended in a fine grained, glassy chocolate-hued matrix. Impact melt breccias are cemented together by the melt created by a massive impact event in interplanetary space which generated sufficient heat to liquify the target rock which engulfed the clasts now seen. Most impact melts do not contain clasts and are slurries — which is not the case in this alluring example.
