9. COLD BOKKEVELD FRAGMENT — LONG BEFORE MURCHISON AND BEFORE MIGHEI…

CM2
Cape Province, South Africa (33°8’ S, 19°23’ E)
Fell October 13, 1838 / TKW: 5.3 kg

Cold Bokkeveld was the very first witnessed fall of a CM2 meteorite. Similar to Murchison, it is rich in organic compounds including amino acids and hydrated minerals.  Murchison is the single most researched meteorite with more than 17,000 papers and articles in which it is either featured or cited. The reason why Cold Bokkeveld is not similarly celebrated is not only because it fell nearly 200 years ago but because there is only 5.3 kg of Cold Bokkeveld known to exist. Exceedingly difficult to obtain, Cold Bokkeveld is a Holy Grail of meteorite collections featuring historic specimens.
