2. AL BIR LAHLOU 001 — A UNIQUE UNGROUPED ACHONDRITE
ACHON-UNGR
Sahara Desert, Western Sahara
Found 2021 / TKW: 12.4 kg
Al Bir Lahlou 001 belongs to a rare and esteemed group of achondrites; it is ungrouped (i.e., it does not fit into the previously established compositional groups of achondrites in the literature). Less than 0.2% of all meteorites are ungrouped achondrites.
Al Bir Lahlou 001was discovered by adventurous meteorite hunters in 2021 — the first meteorite found in the newly designated Al Bir Lahlou (“ABL”) dense collection area in the nation of Western Sahara.
The cut and polished surface reveal an intermingling of approximately 2/3 cream-hued plagioclase and 1/3 green pyroxene grains. Unlike the overwhelming majority of meteorites with metal, the metal in ABL is nearly bereft of nickel. ALB 001 is garnering a good deal of attention from the scientific community. For meteorite cognoscenti. Stay tuned.
