16. COMPLETE SLICE OF ADMIRE
Pallasite – PAL
Lyon County, Kansas (38° 42' N, 96° 6' W)
Found 1881 / TKW: ~ 2 metric tons
While meteorites are among the rarest substances on Earth (all the world’s meteorites weigh less than the world’s annual output of gold), pallasites represent just 0.2% of all known meteorites and are far rarer still. And not all pallasites feature translucent crystals of olivine and peridot.
Admire was discovered during the plowing of a field in Lyon County, Kansas in 1881. Enterprising meteorite hunters — most notably Steve Arnold & Geoff Notkin — returned to the site more than a century later, and after additional gridding and digging, an order of magnitude of more material than originally found was located. From the mantle/core boundary of an asteroid, this is a select complete slice.
116 x 92 x 1mm (4.5 x 3.66 x 0.1 inches) and 56.8 grams.
